After taking a look at 'mille fleur' tapestries from the Middle Ages, we will work through the techniques of the period and weave an image. This course is aimed at people with some weaving experience.

Weaving without a Conventional Loom
March 24th and 25th 2012
Cost £120 or £100 for Historic Scotland members

Maximum number of people: 12
Using found objects for our loom, such as driftwood, slate and china; we will consider different warping techniques. The coloured warp will become a feature, as certain areas will remain shown, creating a frame work to weave on, for either 2 or 3 dimensional tapestries. This course is perfect for both beginners and for those with some experience. Please bring along, if possible, any found objects you might like to use.

Peruvian Tapestries

April 21st and 22nd 2012

Inspiration and ideas for the weekend, will be drawn from Peruvian tapestries, which were often geometric in design. The pattern is repeated, using a limited palette to produce tapestries, with a simple but strong visual impact. This course is perfect for both beginners and for those with some experience.

Moving on with Colour - The Next Step
September 15th and 16th 2012

With a practical understanding of how to weave simple gradations of colour, this course will look closely at how colours can merge and overlap, when interpreting an image. Some weaving experience is preferable.

Weaving Medieval Costume

October 6th and 7th 2012

During the weekend we will look at the detailed period costumes seen in the 'The Hunt of the Unicorn’ tapestry series. The sumptuous velvets and brocades will be woven in wool, silk and gold threads. For people with some weaving experience and are ready to advance.

Making 3 Dimensional Multi-media Tapestries

Working in a variety of ways we will weave, embroider, wrap, drill, construct and paint before bringing together the elements to make free standing pieces of art. This course is perfect for both beginners and for those with some experience.

I have been teaching tapestry for many years, providing workshops for both individuals and groups such as The Embroiderers, Spinners, Weavers and Dyers, Turning Point Scotland, Primary and Secondary Schools and Art Centres. Currently I teach frequent weekend workshops at Stirling Castle, Scotland; but I am open to any person or society who wishes to hire me.
Workshops are available for complete beginners as well as others targeted for those with more experience. Workshop topics range from forming shapes to eccentric weaving to weaving a design to supplementary warps. If the workshop is fully booked or does not fall on a day you can attend then please say as it will help inform future classes.
